Get involved

There are many groups that keep Asbury UMC from the everyday workings to the behind the scenes operations. These are volunteer positions. This page is designed to help you understand what they do and hopefully you will decide where you might like help.

Church Council Vergie Oettinger This group is comprised by the chairperson of all the other groups of the church.  They generally meet every other month unless there is a need to meet for a specific reason. In the meetings they discuss what is happening in the different groups and how to make things better.

Trustees  Matt Tanger The trustees are responsible for the maintenance of the building and grounds of the church. They usually meet on a monthly basis.

SPPRC (Staff Pastor Parish Relations Committee) Laurie Syms These people are responsible for anything that has to do with communications between all members of the congregation and staff.

Sunday School Director Karen Kirwan This person works with Pastor to formulate lesson plans that are current to our times and how children can be good Christians. Our Sunday school teaches work directly the the director to maintain a cohesive and continuing education program for our children.

This is mostly a social group that meet weekly on Thursdays to knit, crochet or color. The Yarners have made scarves and hats for the needy and for children in foster care as well as prayer shawls. They have also made small pieces to be shared in Meals on Wheels bags. They love to share patterns, skills and help to all who join them. The people who color have made book marks for Pastor’s prison ministry as well as cards for Veterans, deployed military troops and shut ins.

Gardeners Myron Washil Myron and his wife Nancy have quite an eye and talent for making our church landscaping warm and welcoming. Myron is mostly a one man band and is always looking for help. If you don’t know much about gardening he is more than willing to help you out.
