Asbury United Methodist Church Ministries

Asbury United Methodist Church Getzville is blessed to have have many ministries who are truly dedicated to Christ and accomplishing His will in our community. Following are brief descriptions of our active ministries.

The United Methodist Men's Ministry

This ministry group is led by Dick Casseri. He is long time member of Asbury UMC and has been part of its growth for many moves and changes. Our men's ministry is open to all members and visitors of our church. We strive to encourage fellowship while enjoying a delicious breakfast once a month. We contribute to the betterment of our church in many different ways including purchasing items to benefit our church and further our missions .

Some of things we do are providing flowers for all the mothers of our church on Mother's Day, fill over 100 plastic eggs for our annual community Easter Hunt. They also sponsor the annual Christmas wreath sale.

Children in Church

We love children in our church service.  Every week our congregation invites our youth to come forward for a message before going to Sunday School.

Our welcoming song is "“This is Where Children Belong” (congregation sings)

"This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshiping throng. Water, God's Word, bread and cup, prayer, and song: This is where children belong."

There is  a Children's moment where the Pastor or the Coordinator of Sunday School talks to the children.  They then are dismissed to go to Sunday School and are back in time to take Communion with their family.

Nursery and Sunday School

A nursery is provided and lovingly staffed. You also can opt to keep your baby in arms in church.  We love to hear the coos and baby sounds.  The nursery cares for infants and toddlers.

The Sunday school is for our older children. You know they want to go when you see them dancing down the isle in church as they are dismissed.  Our coordinator is a retired elementary school teacher and the kids love her.  There is a staff of five teachers who rotate as needed.

The themes of Sunday school are bible based and universal.  They learn to love one another, be tolerant of differences, and remember God made us and loves us all. They learn that they are never too young to be of service to others. AND.... they have fun!  Our kids love their time in Sunday school.

The C.I.A. - Christians in Action!

Christians in Action is a multigenerational Group who meet to help others.  In the past we have made fleece tie blankets for needy children.  They have made pillows, again for children in need.  And before the pandemic they made candy sleds and went caroling at Oishei Children's Hospital.  It will be fun to see what they will do this year since the pandemic has allowed more gatherings.

Stay tuned for upcoming projects!

Outreach Ministry

Our Outreach Ministry is led by Nancy Ott. It is very multi-faceted!

  • We participate in Adopt-a-highway along a portion of Millersport Highway.
  • We adopted a wing of a local nursing home & provide fellowship through sing-a-longs, pizza parties, holiday gatherings & one on one conversation.
  • For our local veterans we have collected fleece lap robes and make holiday cards to send to veterans that are currently deployed.
  • We make holiday cards for local nursing home residents as well as some decorations for the meal trays.
  • In the past we have gone to various nursing homes as well as Children's Hospital to spread holiday cheer through song and hope that now we are post pandemic we will be able to continue this ministry.
  • Annually we celebrate Easter with an Easter egg hunt that is open to the community as well as our church families. We have hidden hundreds of eggs with special eggs to win prize baskets! We have had pony rides and face painting as well as a special area for toddlers.

Fundraising Ministry

The purpose of  fundraising is to provide money for our various mission projects.

Annually, we host a Savers and "Make Us An Offer" Yard sale fundraiser that is typically held at the end of August. This entails collecting, selling and donating clothing and household items to local missions. Our sale also gives people in the community the opportunity to purchase items they may not have the money to pay full price for.

Sweethomies Yarn & Coloring

We affectionately call ourselves "The Sweethomies" because that is where we met for a very long time. We are now meeting in our beautiful church library weekly on Thursdays from 10 am-noon. It is a wonderful chance to do what we love and enjoy each others company.  Some of our coloring projects have been shared with the Kairos Prison Ministry and local nursing homes. Some of our yarning projects have been shared with the United Women of Faith Purse Ministry, Buffalo Burrito Project, local Department of Children's Services and Seneca St United Methodist Church. Whether you are new to coloring , knitting or crocheting we welcome you to join us. We love to chat and share what we love to do.

Adopt-a-Highway

Adopt-a-highway is just one of the things our outreach team participates in. We are committed to keeping a section of MIllersport Highway as free from trash as we can. It's a great opportunity for some free exercise along with fellowship!

All are welcome to join!
